EU parliament demands action on Lisbon goals

Spanish deputy Josep Borrell questioned whether the EU currently possesses the means to deliver on the ambitious Lisbon objectives. “No-one can really disagree with the Lisbon aims but I would have to ask whether we currently have the means at our disposal to achieve them,” said Borrell, parliament’s outgoing president.

The so-called Lisbon agenda called on EU governments to implement a range of economic and social changes.

It committed the EU to become by 2010 “the most dynamic and competitive knowledge-based economy in the world, capable of sustainable economic growth with more and better jobs and economic cohesion, and respect for the environment”. Borrell’s concerns were echoed by another speaker, Swedish Liberal MEP Lena Ek, who warned that it was of “paramount importance” that the EU speedily moves if it is to achieve the Lisbon goals.
