Nicolas Sarkozy and Ségolène Royal, the front-runners in France's presidential race, rushed to beef up their campaigns yesterday against the rise of a centrist candidate.
The latest jump in the popularity of François Bayrou, leader of the Union for French Democracy, stunned Sarkozy's Gaullists and Royal's Socialists. Bayrou's platform -- proposals to reduce the national debt, alter the pension system, and offer more help to small businesses -- has gained support against a backdrop of nagging doubts about Sarkozy and Royal and an election campaign that has failed to impress the electorate.
