Qatar Airways says it is going to buy 80 of the planned new version of the Airbus A350. It is a major boost for the order book for the plane, which had been looking thin in comparison with its rival, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Companies seem to be overcoming their scepticism about the A350, currently undergoing a complete design overhaul after the original version attracted only tepid interest.

As well as the Qatar order, Finnair recently said it will buy 11 of the planes and Singapore Airlines has taken options for 20 of them. In addition Kuwait Airways is in talks with Boeing and Airbus about replacing much of its fleet which could lead to more A350 sales and US Airways will make a decision next month on whether it confirms orders for 20 of the planes.
