3 nearly tied in French polls - by Angela Charlton

PARIS -- Polls show a tight three-way contest in France's presidential race, with a centrist former education minister just a few points behind the two established candidates. But that's only half the story. Six weeks before balloting begins, at least 40 percent of those asked said they still don't know whom they want as president.

The hesitation is a reflection of the high stakes in the most closely watched vote in Europe this year. After 12 years under Jacques Chirac, France is at a crossroads, asking how it can adapt to fast-changing world markets and create jobs without sacrificing its social and labor protections.

A poll by CSA published Thursday shows a remarkably tight spread among the three: If a first round were held this weekend, Sarkozy would get 26 percent of the vote, Royal 25 percent and Bayrou 24 percent. The poll's margin of error is about 3 percentage points.
