Up to 30,000 illegal immigrants will be allowed to remain in the Netherlands under an amnesty granted by MPs that marked a clear break from the hardline approach of the previous Government.
The former asylum-seekers had defied orders to leave the country when their applications failed. Their status became one of the main issues at last autumn’s election, in which the right-wing Liberals (VVD) lost their place in the ruling coalition. "
