"EU membership and migration -- the Eastern European experience

Last week while visiting my brother in Scotland, I could not help but notice how many foreigners were in Edinburgh. Other than bus drivers it was quite difficult to encounter a real Scot. In addition to the usual Australians, South Africans and “old” EU member states, there were masses of Eastern Europeans, particularly Poles. Although the benefits of a cheap Polish plumber or a Slovak mechanic have not gone unnoticed, the general feeling toward these recent arrivals is by and large negative. So when I was discussing eventual Turkish EU membership with the owner of the guest house in which I was staying, he was not exactly overjoyed at the prospect."
