Spanish, German leaders consult on climate, economy

The leaders of Spain and Germany held talks Thursday on ways to join forces to fight climate change at a meeting also marked by worries over global economic turbulence and the future of Kosovo. Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said after meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel that the two countries were «committed and determined» to fight climate change. The two countries, he noted, occupy «leading global positions in renewable energies. Zapatero said he and Merkel agreed to launch projects jointly in Africa aimed at combating change and boosting renewable energy. He did not elaborate. Merkel said she «has the impression that the Spanish government takes this problem very, very seriously.» But she noted, as well, that Spanish officials concede their country still has work to do under the Kyoto protocol against climate change. Merkel said Kosovo is an issue she hopes «to discuss, to solve, in such a way that the greatest possible degree of European unity emerges.
