Dozens Dead After Major Earthquake Strikes Central Italy

Dozens are dead and thousands left homeless after a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck central Italy Monday.Guido Bertolaso, the head of Italy's Civil Protection Department, said that between 10,000 and 15,000 buildings were damaged by the earthquake. Italy's Premier Silvio Berlusconi declared a state of emergency, which will release federal funds to deal with the situation.Earthquakes are not uncommon in central Italy. The last major one was on Oct. 31, 2002, which killed 28 people in the south-central Molise region. In November 1980, a severe quake hit Naples, killing more than 2,500 people. Presently some 140 people are already reported dead and the toll is rising.

There has been a lot more success in the past few years using many sensors to identify earth characteristics occurring before an earthquake. Many of those sensors are displayed at http://www.electricquakes.org

Some of those may eventually be useful for meaningful earthquake prediction.

Someone has also come out with a device that supposedly senses the P wave (Primary wave) of a major earthquake which gives you time to take cover before the real shaking from the S (secondary ) wave hits. Since P waves travel faster than S waves (like a lighting flash is seen before thunder is heard if the lighting strike is far away) it actually can give you maybe 10 seconds warning if the quake is huge and far away like "The Big One" would be on the San Andreas fault near Los Angeles.

*Product Description*
The Quake Alarm is designed to provide instant warning of seismic activity by detecting the "P" wave (compression wave) of an earthquake, which travels faster than the more destructive "S" wave (shear wave). The Quake Alarm saves valuable seconds by removing the guesswork in earthquake detection. It is capable of detecting large earthquakes that occur hundreds of miles away and can detect moderate to minor earthquakes for many miles around your local area. One very important advantage of the Quake Alarm is that it can wake you up and alert you the moment the quake starts so that you can immediately take cover or tend to other family members. The Quake Alarm can eliminate confusion, save valuable seconds and provide peace of mind.
