Free Open Source - Web Development and hosting Platforms for Windows, Linux and Macintosh

It is becoming far easier and less costly to develop your own website using Open Source Web authoring with free down-loadable programs than buying a similar expensive commercially produced program. One of these free Open Source programs is KompoZer. KompoZer is part of the Nvu group . The Nvu group provide complete free Web Authoring Systems for Microsoft Windows, Linux and Macintosh users to rival programs like FrontPage and Dreamweaver. Nvu (pronounced N-view, for a "new view") makes managing a web site a snap. Basically anyone can create web pages and manage a websites now with no technical expertise or knowledge of HTML. Nvu got their start from the Mozilla Composer code base, because the original plan for the World Wide Web was for it to be used much more interactively. Early browsers such as Netscape had HTML editors built-in. After Netscape changed into Mozilla, the HTML editor remained integrated into the full Mozilla suite. Daniel Glazman who was the architect of the Mozilla Composer became the lead developer at Nvu. In the meantime Nvu matured into what many developers consider to be an excellent, fully developed web authoring system that rivals Dreamweaver or FrontPage. Many people also prefer Nvu because it is is extremely easy to use for the non-technical user and not bogged down with "feature-bloat", and runs far more efficiently than either of the commercial applications. In addition to HTML authoring, Nvu has a built-in CSS editor and site manager. Other features include template support, table wizards, and even a table of contents generator. It's integrated ftp client allows you to upload your site to your server using the site manager.

Wikipedia defines Open Source Software (OSS) as computer software for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that meets the Open Source Definition or that is in the public domain. This permits users to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms. It is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open source software is the most prominent example of open source development and often compared to user-generated content. The term open source software originated as part of a marketing campaign for free software. A report by Standish Group states that adoption of open source software models has resulted in savings of about $60 billion per year to consumers.
