Turkey arrests more Ergenekon suspects

In Turkey, police have once again arrested several prominent individuals in connection with an alleged plot to bring down the government. Among those seized were the rector of a university in Ankara and two other high-ranking academics. The police operation was part of an investigation into the shadowy nationalist organisation Ergenekon, which is reputed to be responsible for terrorist activities. One hundred and fifty people are currently standing trial for suspected ties with the organisation. They include former soldiers, lawyers and academics. Prosecutors say the group was preparing a series of attacks throughout Turkey to provoke a coup against Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's government.

Critics have denied the existence of Ergenekon. The Turkish opposition has called the government moves an offensive against secular forces within the country.
