Press freedom around the world declining, says study

Press freedom declined in every region of the world last year, according to a study released on Thursday by the Washington, DC-based press freedom group, Freedom House. The study, which was released to coincide with World Press Freedom Day on Sunday, said that 64 of the 195 countries and territories covered were rated “not free”, 61 were rated “partly free” and 70 were rated “free”. In its study last year, Freedom House rated 72 countries as “free”.

The group said that while press freedom had declined in 2008 for the seventh consecutive year, last year marked the first time that it deteriorated in every region. “The journalism profession today is up against the ropes and fighting to stay alive, as pressures from governments, other powerful actors and the global economic crisis take an enormous toll,” said Freedom House executive director, Jennifer Windsor.
