Russia determined to avert another Cold War

Russia needs a safe and civilized world in which nuclear tensions and stand-offs are things of the past. Accordingly, it is determined to do everything in its power to avert another Cold War. In an interview for ABC News Monday ahead of flying to the international summit on nuclear security in Washington, he also hoped the United States would refrain from building up missile defenses in European countries.

The President warned such deployments would be seen by Russia as a threat and destroy this country’s latest strategic arms reduction treaty with the US. He proposed an alternative in the form of a jointly-run global missile defence system. The Russian leader also indicated Russian readiness to consider ‘smart’ sanctions against Iran. They would apply to trade with that country, particularly in arms.
