The EU foreign policy chief Lady Catherine Ashton said in a statement this afternoon following the resignation of President Mubarack that 'the EU respects president Mubarak's decision today. By standing down, he has listened to the voices of the Egyptian people and has opened the way to faster and deeper reforms'.Speaking as the army was preparing to run the affairs of the country, Ashton called for an 'accelerated' transition 'leading to a broad-based government which will respect the aspirations of, and deliver stability for, the Egyptian people.
Ashton said that 'the EU stands ready in any way it can' to help Egypt towards achieving 'deep democracy.'
