Iran - "Look who is calling the kettle black"

It is ironic that the Iranian Government under the supreme leadership of Mr. Ali Kamenei is now calling for the establishment of a more radical Islamic government in Egypt. Iran seems to have forgotten their own popular uprising in 2009. At that time, just like in Egypt today, social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, also played a crucial role in sharing information and organizing demonstrations for Iranians throughout the world. Pictures and videos of protests and police brutality in Teheran were uploaded for all to see, before access to them was shut down by Ahmadinejad and his henchmen.

The Iranian Government, however, contrary to the Egyptian Government today, did not act with caution in dealing with the protesters, but used overwhelming suppressive force to eventually end the popular uprising in a bloodbath.

The fact remains that Iran has not learned from this experience or changed its course.  It continues to be a suppressive and undemocratically ruled country. It executes about 3 people every day. This January at least 66 people were executed, according to Iranian media reports. The actual number is  probably far higher. "The Iranian Judiciary is on an execution binge orchestrated by the intelligence and security agencies," said spokesman Aaron Rhodes of the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran,. The group said the number of unreported executions is even higher in politically motivated cases.

Of course, like any country, Iran is allowed to have it's own culture and social morals.  But no, it is not considered civilized by any human being, to bury people up to their chests in the sand, then throw large sharp rocks at their heads until they die and justify it because "a court' has convicted them of adultery.

Iran continues to be a troubled nation and it is clear to all  who are familiar with what is going on inside the country, that under the surface the fire of popular unrest is smoldering and could erupt at any time. Regardless of what President Ahmadinejad says, with about half of Iran's population under 25, the seeds have been planted there for a freer and more open society. The Genie is out of the bottle, not only in Iran, but everywhere in the Middle East.  Dictatorships, be it of a military or a theocracy in nature do not fit the world of today anymore.

Mr. Ali Kamenei and his buddies better watch out what is going on in their own "backyard" before meddling in those of others. They could be in for a rude awakening.
