Retailers work on how to respond to violence - by Jayne O’Donnell and Kate Coughlin

Four people were shot to death in stores in the U.S. since last month, a grim reminder to retail officials that efforts to step up security can’t happen fast enough.

And last Saturday, six people were killed and 16 injured by a gunman at an Amsterdam mall.
While little can be done to stop someone intent on killing in a confined area full of people, mall and shopping center owners are working with stores and law enforcement to develop plans on how to respond to violent incidents. Some are doing drills on how to respond to shooters and are practicing evacuations.
