WTO Rules against China - by James Lewis

The World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled today against China and in favor of the US/EU/Mexico. The US/EU/Mex group claimed Chinese trade policy restrictions on the export of key components for material industries including aluminum, steel and chemicals were unfair and in violation of China's treaty commitments to the WTO and WTO rules.

China had maintained that quotas and tariffs on bauxite, zinc and other material exports were necessary to maintain environmental standards. Critics claimed China’s policy encouraged the use of Chinese manufacturing facilities for material industry materials.

While the WTO ruling is expected to impact global commodity prices and improve access to open markets and free trade, WTO-watchers expect a larger impact to be felt when a ruling is released on a similar Chinese policy for rare-earth minerals that are used in the construction of high tech devices.
