China criticizes Iran sanctions as Merkel visits; lawyer blocked from meeting German leader

China’s premier pledged to help Europe fight its debt crisis during a meeting Friday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Peking but a ruling party newspaper criticized sanctions on Iran and a human rights lawyer was blocked from meeting Merkel.

China is “willing to cooperate with Europe to fight the current crisis,” said Premier Wen Jiabao at a meeting with Merkel and German businesspeople in the southern business center of Guangzhou. The two leaders flew there Friday after talks in Beijing.

On Friday, a lawyer who has defended dissidents, Mo Shaoping, said he was invited to a dinner Thursday with Merkel but police told him he could not attend. The dinner was to be followed by a private meeting with Merkel to discuss China’s legal environment and lawyers who have been harassed by the government.

Note EU-Digest: Europe should be aware of the wolf which comes in sheep clothing and must not shove the issues it has with China on human rights and their at times quite undemocratic behavior under the table, just for the sake of their financial support.
