The Netherlands: Endless government talks on budget cuts reach end of sixth week and approval by parliament not sure

In the Prime Minister’s official residence The Catshuis, the VVD, Christian Democrat and Freedom Party negotiators are coming to the end of their sixth week of talks on cuts. It’s believed they may be ready to send a package of measures for review to the Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis.

If the bureau indicates that the figures add up, it is probable that the three parties will reach agreement on the measures. The bureaus is expected to need a week to review the effects of the billions of euros of cuts and reforms. Then the package of measures will be put before the parliamentary factions of the three parties.

On Thursday the Government Information Service informed journalists that the agreement would take at least another week. The talks continued after Friday’s weekly cabinet meeting.
