Turkey bombs Syrian targets, calls for urgent NATO summit

Turkey on Wednesday bombed Syria in response to a mortar bomb fired from Syrian territory which killed five Turkish civilians, the prime minister’s office said, and called for an emergency NATO summit to address the crisis.

“Our armed forces in the border region immediately retaliated against this heinous attack... by shelling the targets spotted by radar,” Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan’s office said in a statement.
Erdogan’s office added that NATO will hold an urgent meeting to address the crisis.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu had contacted NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen, and "it has been decided that the NATO council meet urgently," the office said in a statement.
