Netherlands: Opposition has risen from wealthy conservatives over new Dutch coalition’s health insurance premium plans - by Thomas Whittle

Opposition has risen in the Netherlands over the new VVD-PvdA coalition’s plans on the income-dependent health care premium, especially among the VVD voters and members.

By linking health premiums to income, the new plans mean people with an annual income of over 70,000 euros (90,615 U.S. dollars) will have to pay 482 euros per month in health insurance fees while people on welfare benefits will pay just 20 euros, Nos television reported.

The new plans have provoked strong reactions from voters and members of the VVD, traditionally a party of people with higher incomes. They blame the VVD leader Mark Rutte for being trapped by PvdA leader Diederik Samsom.

However, Rutte and Samsom said the media calculations were wrong, because the compensating measures were not taken into full account.
