Britain: Cambridge choir hails Ascension Day from church roof -by Eleanor Busby

It was an early start for the choir of Cambridge’s Great St Mary’s church as they gathered on the roof this morning to mark Ascension Day.

The century old tradition was witnessed by more than 50 people who gathered on Senate House Hill to hear the choir sing - after the choristers had clambered the 100 steps up to the roof.
Ascension Day commemorates the Christian belief that Jesus ascended into heaven 40 days after his resurrection.

Led by Sam Hayes director of music at Great St Mary’s, the choir of 30 people, aged 8 to 79, sang at the Ascension hymn Hail The Day That Sees Him Rise at 7.45am.

Members from both the boys’ choir and adults’ choir entertained the congregation of around 20 people as the sun shone onto to the top of church.

The hymn was followed by a rendition of the Ascension Day-themed anthem God Is Gone Up and a service given by Reverend Peter Hayler.

After the 20 minute service, the congregation headed over to Michael House for their traditional Ascension Day breakfast.
