Iceland's President to visit Portland Maine for MITC shipping event

Following the relocation of Icelandic shipping company Eimskip's American headquarters to Portland, the leader of Iceland will visit Maine this month to speak during Maine International Trade Center's Trade Day.

The Portland Press Herald reported Iceland President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson will speak during the May 31 event about business opportunities that might be created as global warming shrinks the polar ice cap.

Grímsson is expected to talk about how that melting will open access to iron ore, gas and oil and open transpolar shipping routes that could drastically reduce shipping time between Europe and Asia.
